Dermabrasion is the process through which a dermatologist removes the upper layers of skin with the help of a wire brush. The brush has a wheel which rotates at a fast speed and causes an abrasion effect when bought in touch with your skin. This helps to remove the upper layer of skin which may have blemishes such as birthmarks, acne or moles giving way to a newer layer of skin with a lighter and better texture.

Dermabrasion treatment is ideally used for treating the face of the patient although the method can be used to treat other parts of the body as well. Its efficiency is dependent on how deeply the abrasion effect must be carried out on the patient. Issues such as brush pressure, duration of treatment and the existing skin condition of the patient need to be factored in achieve the best possible results.

Method

The face of the patient is thoroughly cleaned and cleansed before the commencement of the procedure. An ice pack is placed for a period of 30 minutes until the skin begins to firm up. Freezing sprays also may be used to create the same effect. An anesthetic is the given to induce a feeling of numbness while the doctor works on your skin. The doctor then treats each region one by one until the requisite amount of upper layer skin has been removed.

After surgery

All patients who have undergone dermabrasion treatment must be careful for a period of 12 weeks after surgery. The new skin ideally takes about a week to form and may look a little pinkish red for a couple of month. But this can be easily covered with a little makeup until the operated region returns to your normal skin tone consistency.

Tips to ensure proper care post surgery

Wash your face at regular intervals to ensure that you do not infected regions due to issues of hygiene.
Keep your face nicely aerated at all times to promote quick healing.
Apply medications like ointment and lotions on operated regions. This would help to keep the skin moist and accentuates healing.
Do not travel out under the glare of the sun for long periods until the healing process is fully completed.
