Dermabrasion is the process through which a physician regulates controlled abrasion to remove upper layers of skin with the help of specific wire brush. The brush rotates at a rapid pace creating a gentle sand paper like abrasion effect when bought in contact with the patients skin.

The old skin would eventually make way for a newer and smoother form of skin that has better texture.  Dermabrasion is mainly used as a method of treatment for producing clearer skin and removing blemishes such as acne, moles or birthmarks.

The face is the most usually preferred region for dermabrasion treatment in the body. Although other parts of the body can also be subjected to this treatment to achieve the required results. Degree of effectiveness is dependent on how extensively the procedure is carried out on the patient. Factors such as pressure, duration and overall health of the patient’s skin need to be assessed to derive the best possible outcome.

Method

The patient is given a local anesthetic to create numbness prior to the procedure. The region to be treated is washed and cleaned thoroughly and the skin is exposed to moisture for a duration of half an hour. This helps to keep the skin firm, while a freezing spray may also be used to get enhanced results. Freezing spays are especially used if the patient require extensive abrasions. The affected regions are then treated one by one with the wire brush where the upper layer of skin is removed.

Period post surgery

The new skin usually takes around a week or more for the new skin to grow back. The color tone may initially be a lighter shade of pink or red, which you can easily cover up with the use of makeup. The color of your skin should return to normalcy in 6 to 10 weeks.

It is very crucial to be administering proper care to skin during this period: -

Rinse your face with water regularly to prevent any infection to fester on your skin. Keep yourself nicely         aerated so that the wounds can close early.
Apply recommended ointment to exposed regions for quick healing.
Avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight
